Government information in the Cofrin Library
We are also a full Wisconsin Depository Library since 1974.
- Local documents: We collect selectively; these are housed in the Wisconsin documents collection.
- International: selective, from intergovernmental organizations, not specific foreign countries. Publications received since 1997 are in the book stacks.
- RAND Collection: 1967 to 2008. These reports are issued by the Rand Corporation, a government sponsored think tank
- Maps: The Cofrin library served as a DMA (Defense Mapping Agency) and selective US Geological Survey Map depository. Most of the maps in our extensive collection are government produced.
ARRANGEMENT AND ACCESS
Most documents collections use their own call number system, which may be unfamiliar to you. The call numbers are often based on the issuing agency and type of report, rather than by subject matter. Therefore, materials on a particular topic may not all have similar call numbers.
Federal: SuDocs classification system (by agency); Materials we received after September, 1998 in paper or electronically (not microfiche) are cataloged and can be searched in the Cofrin Library Catalog. For older items, microfiche, or enhanced subject access, you will need to use specific indexes listed on the databases page and on our Government Publications guide .
Wisconsin: State Historical Society System (by agency); Most are catalogued and are searchable in the Cofrin Library Catalog
International: These are arranged by Library of Congress system, same as books; (subject arrangement) in Cofrin Library Catalog. Some older United Nations documents use the system established by the United Nations. These are gradually being changed over to the Library of Congress system. Please consult library staff for assistance with this collection.
RAND: By report number. Newer ones can be searched in the Cofrin Library Catalog; use the paper index or the Rand web site at http://www.rand.org/Abstracts/ for older ones
Maps: arrangement varies; consult our map guide or the reference staff for assistance with locating maps.
