Library Instruction Policy

Effective October 1997, Revised July 2002

I. Use of the Library Instruction & General Access Lab (CL 304)

  1. The main purpose for the Library Instruction & General Access Lab is for Library-related instruction.
  2. When the lab is not being used for Library-related instruction it will be open as a general access lab and follow the campus computer usage policy.
  3. The Library will be staffed by a lab consultant during peak times throughout the week and the current hours will be posted in the lab.
  4. When a consultant is not on duty a telephone will be available for users to use to call a consultant in the main General Access Lab.
  5. Generally the lab will not be reserved for special interest groups who do not require Library instruction; exceptions will be made at the discretion of the Library on an individual basis.
  6. The room must be cleared 15 minutes prior to a scheduled class.

II. Lab Workstations

  1. Workstations will duplicate the resources on the workstations in the General Access Lab.
  2. Because maintenance of the networked software environment is crucial, configurations will not be changed to accommodate specialized software for temporary instruction, except at the discretion of the Library.
  3. Because student funding was used in the purchase of much of the equipment, the primary use of the area will be to support campus constituents.
  4. Workstations in the reference area will not be reserved for instructional or class use, to ensure access for others while the lab is being used for instruction.

III. Class Presentations

  1. The Library Instruction Area & General Access Lab can accommodate up to 45 students for presentations or 28 students for hands-on instruction. If larger classes need to be accommodated, the Instruction Librarian may take the presentation to the classroom.
  2. It is highly recommended that instructors accompany their class to facilitate the effectiveness of the session.
  3. A Library instructor must be present during any presentation to insure proper use of the equipment and to answer questions.
  4. Classes may be taken to other areas of the Library, but general tours will not be given.
  5. Instruction for off-campus groups will be offered only to high school seniors, juniors, and adult groups; exceptions will be made at the discretion of the Library.

IV. Scheduling

  1. Classes should be scheduled with the Coordinator of Information Literacy and Outreach who will maintain and post a master schedule outside the lab.
  2. Classes wanting to use areas other than the reference area must schedule their visit in advance. Only one class per floor in any one class period will be permitted. Instructors must accompany classes.
  3. Classes will be scheduled on a first come-first serve basis with a minimum of 10 working days advance notice. Preference will be given to credit courses over non-credit courses.
