Reference & Instructional Services

The Reference & Instructional Services Department plays an active role in the intellectual life of the campus by facilitating the research process. Because we believe in the importance of developing critical thinking skills and mastering the research process as integral parts of the educational experience, the staff do not undertake subject research on the behalf of users.

To learn more about Reference & Instructional Services choose one of the following:

Services Provided:

  • Assist users in learning how to effectively use the Cofrin Library Catalog, print collections, and electronic resources to conduct research.
  • Assist in verifying whether the library owns a particular item.
  • Assist users in identifying appropriate search terms.
  • Assist users in developing a research strategy.
  • Assist users in choosing the most useful databases for their research
  • Assist users in evaluating search results.
  • Assist users in refining their research strategy.
  • Make referrals to other libraries and organizations for materials not owned by the Cofrin Library.
  • Assist users with our specialized collections, including our federal documents depository collection , State of Wisconsin documents collections, and map collection.

Assistance is provided to individuals through one-on-one reference desk service. The library instruction program provides assistance to groups through presentations and hands-on exercises. Consultation services are also available for the faculty in developing effective library assignments for their classes.

For users who prefer to learn on their own, the department provides:

  • guides on library information, how to use particular resources, and research topics.
  • handouts on the research process in complex areas such as legislative research.
  • a virtual library tour
  • Guides and handouts are available in the two literature racks near the circulation desk on the third floor of the library. Electronic versions are being added regularly on our web site.

  • that we are a State Data Center affiliate? The nationwide network of State Data centers provide census data, training, and technical support. As an affiliate we assist both campus and community users in identifying and obtaining census data.
  • that we are a selective depository for U.S. federal government publications and a regional depository for State of Wisconsin government publications? Depository collections and assistance using them are freely available to all.

Hours:

During the regular semester the reference desk is normally staffed the hours listed below. Summer and break hours vary. For the most current library hours check the library hours web page.

Monday through Thursday: 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Fridays: 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Saturday: 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Sunday: 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
