Electronic Reserves (E-Reserves)

What Are Electronic Reserves?

Electronic Reserves, or e-reserves, are electronic versions of materials assigned by an instructor for a course.  The advantages of electronic reserves over paper reserves are:

  • materials are accessible remotely, without coming to the library
  • materials are available any time the Cofrin Library Catalog is available (approximately 7:30 am to 2:00 am)
  • there is no risk of missing, torn or out-of-order pages
  • there is no waiting to photocopy materials

Electronic Reserves is being implemented at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay campus in January, 2001. During the first few months we are working with one faculty member to provide access to electronic files.  After policies and procedures are cemented, additional instructors will be added.  If you are an instructor interested in participating, please send an e-mail to Leah Liebergen at liebergl@uwgb.edu or phone the Reserves Department at 465-2540.

Hardware/Software Requirements

  • Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows NT, UNIX or Macintosh computer.
  • Web browser.Recommended: Netscape Navigator 4.0 (or higher) or Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 (or higher).
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader software on your PC.See "Viewing/Printing the files" below.
  • A laser printer is recommended for printing PDF files and is available at the general access computing labs on campus (Cofrin Library, third floor, and Instructional Services, room 1129), in the Residence Life Community Center, and in Roy Downham Hall (for Downham Hall residents).

How to Access E-Reserves

Searching the catalog:

Electronic Reserves are accessible through the Cofrin Library Catalog. Use the Course Reserves search screen to search by Instructor or Course. Both print and electronic reserve items will appear on the screen. Click on the title you are interested in. If the item is available electronically, there will be a link labeled, "E-Reserve link:" Click on this to get to the full-text e-reserve document.

If you are connecting from off-campus, you will be prompted for a username and password. You can obtain this from your instructor. On-campus users should not be prompted for a password.

Viewing/Printing the files:

Most items on e-reserve are PDF files.; In order to view PDF documents the Adobe Acrobat Reader is required.; If you do not have Acrobat Reader installed on your computer, click on the button below to download it to your home computer. Note: the Acrobat Reader is already available on all UW-Green Bay campus networked computers.

Common Problems/Assistance

Q: Files take a very long time to print.

A: Downloading and printing times depend on file size, modem speed and type of printer and memory available on printer.  As we work to refine the process of scanning and saving files, we recommend users view and print documents from campus workstations; downloading and printing times will be greatly reduced.

Q: A specific page in the document won't print at all, or prints as one or more partial pages.

A: This may happen if the page contains graphics and you are printing to a laser printer with less than 8 MB of memory.  Try printing to another printer, either an inkjet or a laser printer in one of the general access computer labs (see Hardware/Software Requirements for locations of labs).
