Registers

What is a register?

A register is a document that accompanies most archival collections.  It describes the scope and content of a collection, as well as providing a list of what is stored in each box and folder (or filmed on each reel of microfilm).  This is particularly useful for very large collections, and can help narrow down a specific portion of a collection that may be of interest to the researcher.

How can I see a register?

In the past, registers have always "lived" with their collections in printed format at their home repository.  With the advent of the Internet, however, many registers have become available in electronic format online.  Some collections at the Green Bay Area Research Center have electronic registers.  For a list search the Cofrin Library Catalog for online finding aids .
