Linking competency elements (adding a parent or child)

A competency structure is created by linking elements together. You can create the link from either element, by adding the other element as a parent or a child. You can also use the structure page to create a new element and link to it.

Note  If you are using Competency Status, you cannot add or remove links that change the definition of an Approved or Archived competency. The Add and Remove features are not displayed on the Structure page of an Approved or Archived competency or of a learning objective attached to an Approved or Archived competency.

Link existing elements (add existing parents or children)

  1. On the Competencies List page, click on the element you want to link with existing parents and children.
  2. Click Structure from the context menu beside the Edit Competency or Edit Learning Objective heading.
  3. Click the Edit Structure tab.
  4. Do one of the following:
    • Click Add Parent to attach the current element to one or more higher elements. (For example, if you are on a learning objective’s page and you want to attach the learning objective to a competency.)
    • Click Add Child to attach the current element to one or more lower elements. (For example, if you are on a learning objective’s page and you want to attach an activity to that learning objective.)
  5. Select Existing Competency, Existing Learning Objective, or  Incorporate Activities. See Associating activities with learning objectives for more detailed information about incorporating activities and rubric assessments with learning objectives.
  6. Select the elements you want to link to and click Add or Add Selected.

Create a new element and associate it with an existing one

  1. On the Competencies List page, click on the element you want to link with new parents and children.
  2. Click Structure from the context menu beside the Edit Competency or Edit Learning Objective heading.
  3. Click the Edit Structure tab.
  4. Do one of the following:
    • Click Add Parent to attach the current element to one or more higher elements. (For example, if you are on a learning objective’s page and you want to attach the learning objective to a competency).
    • Click Add Child to attach the current element to one or more lower elements. (For example if you are on a learning objective’s page and you want to attach an activity to that learning objective.)
  5. Select New Competency or New Learning Objective.
  6. Enter the new element's information in the pop-up form.
  7. Click Add.

Link an activity to a learning objective from another tool

  1. Do one of the following:
    For Do this
    A dropbox activity On the Dropbox Folders page, click Edit from the context menu beside the dropbox folder you want to add a link to.
    A quiz activity On the Manage Quizzes page, click on the quiz you want to add a link to.
    A survey activity On the Manage Surveys page, click on the survey you want to add a link to.
    A grade item activity On the Manage Grades page, click on the grade item you want to add a link to.
    A discussion topic activity On the Discussions List page, click Edit Topic from the context menu beside the topic you want to add a link to.
  2. Click the Objectives tab.
  3. Click Associate Learning Objectives.
  4. Browse or search for learning objectives and select the check boxes beside the learning objectives you want to add. If you are currently editing a Content activity, proceed to Step 6.
  5. Click Add Assessment Method to associate a rubric or numeric assessment. Once you select an Assessment Type, fill in its related assessment method or criteria. If you want to set an assessment threshold users must achieve to complete the learning objective, select The activity is required to complete learning objective and set a Threshold.
  6. Click Add Selected.
