Problems opening non-HTML files in IE

We have had some reports of students and instructors having difficulty opening Word, Powerpoint, or other non-HTML documents in Internet Explorer.

When attempting to view a non-HTML document from the Content area of your D2L site (e.g., .doc, .ppt), Internet Explorer should give you the option to OPEN or SAVE the document. If you are not given this option and you are experiencing difficulty viewing a particular document, complete the following steps:

  1. From your Desktop, select My Computer.
  2. Select the Tools drop-down menu, followed by Folder Options.
  3. Select the File Types tab, and wait for the list of Registered File Types to appear.
  4. Scroll down and select the file type you are having difficulty viewing (e.g., .DOC, .PPT, or other).
  5. Select the Advanced button, and "Deselect" the Browse In Same Window option (i.e., remove the green checkmark).
  6. Click OK and close the Folder Options window.
  7. Restart Internet Explorer and log back into D2L.
  8. Navigate to your course and click on the file you wish to view. You should now be able to select the Open option to open the document within D2L, or the Save option if you wish to download the file to your computer before opening.

Another solution:

There is another solution that works well for Word and PowerPoint files and does not involve changing browser settings.

  1. In Content, click on Compile For Printing (upper right)
  2. Put a check by the file(s) you want to download and click View
  3. Right (Control) - Click on the link for the desired file and select Download
  4. Save the file to your computer and open it from there
