Research Interests

  • Nanoscale Communication Systems and Nanonetworks: Molecular communication (MC) systems and MC nanonetworks. Biological and bio-inspired information theory. MC paradigm for emerging applications.
  • Wireless Communication and Positioning Systems: Ultra-wideband (UWB) indoor and outdoor wireless communication and positioning systems and UWB wireless sensor networks.
  • Emerging and Sustainable Technologies: Renewable energy resources technology development and feasibility studies. Rural telecommunications and information and communication technologies (ICT) for sustainable development. Advanced technologies for the developing world. Electrical engineering education.

Dr. Mahfuz has received several awards and scholarships including the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) doctoral scholarship (PGS-D, 2010-2013), the University of Ottawa Excellence Award (2010–2013), the University of Ottawa Admissions Scholarship (2009–2012), the University of Calgary Graduate Research Scholarship (2007), the 2nd Best Poster Awards in WiSense Workshops (2014, 2010), the Wireless Personal Multimedia Communications (WPMC) Prize (2005), the Asian Institute of Technology Fellowship (2003–2005), and the Government of France Scholarship (2003–2005). Dr. Mahfuz was also nominated for the Excellence Award for Teaching Assistants in Science and Engineering at the University of Ottawa, Canada (2013).

Dr. Mahfuz is an author/co-author of several journal papers, book chapters, and conference papers published internationally. He has an experience of university teaching with students from different nationalities and cultural backgrounds. Dr. Mahfuz has also been involved in scholarly activities as technical program committee member of several conferences and technical reviewer of several journals.

He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
