Auditions

Auditions will take place Saturday, November 12, 2022 at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Manitowoc Campus. Preliminary auditions begin at 8:00 a.m. Final auditions take place at 1:00 p.m. Auditions are held in room L126 in Lakeside Hall at UW-Green Bay, Manitowoc Campus, 705 Viebahn Street, Manitowoc, as a public performance.

High School & Undergraduate College Students

(ages 16 up to and including age 25)

First Prize

$1500 Scholarship Award and a solo performance with the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, Manitowoc Campus (UW-Green Bay, Manitowoc Campus) Lakeshore Wind Ensemble March 4, 2023 concert at the Capitol Civic Centre, Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

Second Prize

$1000 Scholarship Award and a solo performance with the UW-Green Bay, Manitowoc Campus Lakeshore Wind Ensemble on its March 4, 2023 concert at the Capitol Civic Centre, Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

Third Prize

$750 Scholarship Award and a possible alternate solo performance with the UW-Green Bay, Manitowoc Campus Lakeshore Wind Ensemble on its March 4, 2023 concert at the Capitol Civic Centre, Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

Contest Music

One movement from any published concerto or solo work for wind ensemble brass and woodwind instruments, multiple mallet percussion, and piano, with band accompaniment. The work may be a transcription from traditional orchestral repertoire or an original solo work with wind ensemble accompaniment. Proof of availability of scores/parts MUST be indicated on the application. Rental works which cost in excess of $300 for score/parts will not be accepted. The jury and conductor of the Lakeshore Wind Ensemble reserve the right to disqualify a contestant if the literature performed is not of highest artist/musical quality. Although performance from memory is not required, contestants are encouraged to do so. Disqualification will result if any copyright violation is discovered. Three judges’ copies must be provided at the time of audition.

Judges

Judges for the contest are respected professional woodwind, brass, percussion and piano specialists/artists. Each judge will provide contestants with written comments at the end of preliminary and/or final auditions. Preliminary winners will receive their written comments for both the preliminary and final auditions at the conclusion of the contest. Any judge having a family, teaching, or professional relationship with a contestant must declare that relationship and abstain from voting on that individual performance. The decisions of the judges are final.

General Rules

It is the responsibility of each contestant to ensure that wind ensemble parts are available for works to be auditioned, and must furnish the name and address of the publisher or other source on the application form. Contestants may forfeit their right to audition and winners may forfeit their awards if their chosen work is not published or is unavailable at the time of the audition for the solo instrument and wind ensemble/band accompaniment. Confirmation of its availability must be made prior to the audition date. It also is the responsibility of each contestant to be on time for all scheduled events. Any contestant who is late will be moved to the end of the schedule. A piano accompaniment is recommended. Contestant must provide his/her own accompanist. Winners MUST perform with the Lakeshore Wind Ensemble on its March 4, 2023 concert or forfeit the scholarship award. Attendance at two dress rehearsals prior to the concert is mandatory. Previous first place winners are not eligible to re-enter on the same instrument following the year in which they won.

Entry Fee

A non-refundable entry fee of $20.00 must accompany each application, entry deadline is October 21, 2022. Please make checks payable to: Lakeshore Wind Ensemble Association. Each contestant is responsible for providing his/her own food, lodging and transportation, as well as that of his/her accompanist.

Deadline

Entry deadline, October 21, 2022. Contestants will be notified of their scheduled audition time via email by November 1, 2022.

Instruments

The 2022-2023 LWEA Young Artists’ Competition features wind ensemble/band brass, woodwinds, percussion and piano, including: trumpet or cornet, French horn, trombone, baritone or euphonium, tuba, flute/piccolo, B-flat clarinet, bass clarinet, oboe, bassoon, and soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophone, and multiple and/or mallet percussion instruments, and solo piano.
