Overview

The Modern Languages Program at UW-Green Bay offers majors and minors in French, German and Spanish as well as degrees leading to teaching certification in these languages. With an innovative and dynamic approach to the study of languages, the French, German and Spanish majors and minors at UW-Green Bay include courses in language, literature, cinema, culture, second language pedagogy, translation, and business at the undergraduate level and provide students a wide range of study abroad and internship opportunities as well. The curriculum is designed to assist students to achieve a high level of proficiency in these languages and attain the global awareness and international perspectives expected of educated citizens and welcomed by employers and graduate schools. UW-Green Bay’s Modern Languages program offers excellent preparation for students embarking on a number of professional careers in education, business, government, travel, tourism, and international organizations.

Introductory language courses in Arabic, Hmong, Italian, Japanese and Oneida are also offered every semester. For more information, contact the Chair of Modern Languages.

Opportunities

  • The Modern Languages Resource Center offers multiple tools to support the study of languages.
  • Weekly Conversation Tables and tutoring sessions are available for language students.
  • The Language House, a space used by Modern Languages students and faculty for a number of curricular and co-curricular activities.
  • An International Business Minor in collaboration with UW-Green Bay Business Program is also available for Modern Language students.
  • In collaboration with the Office of Outreach and Extension, a Spanish Certificate in the Professions is offered for working professionals.
  • Internships and opportunities for off-campus study and study abroad are available to obtain credits in each major and minor.
  • A Scholar in Residence Program allows students to get a closer perspective on current issues by studying for a semester with a leading intellectual from the Spanish-speaking world.
  • The Modern Languages Academic Awards recognize every year two outstanding graduating students from each language in the categories of Academic Excellence and Applied Use of Language.
