Stefan Thomas Hall received his B.A. from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Saint Louis University in St. Louis, MO and is currently Assistant Professor of Humanistic Studies and English at the University of Wisconsin--Green Bay, specializing in Anglo-Saxon, Middle-English, Arthurian, Scottish, and Scandinavian literature of the Medieval period.
Hall has been playing jazz guitar since an early age and has composed hundreds of jazz and classical pieces. A semi-professional jazz guitarist since the age of eighteen, Hall led his own jazz ensembles such as The Not so Mellow Jazz Quintet and played extensively with jazz groups led by musicians such as guitarist Roland Gresham and saxophonist Brian Hogg in and around the Nashville, TN area. In graduate school, Hall gave jazz guitar lessons and performed weekly gigs as a solo jazz guitarist from 2000 to 2002 at Fraser's Brown Bag restaurant in the Soulard neighborhood across from the Annheiser-Busch Brewery in St. Louis, MO. Hall also performed with various jazz ensembles including groups led by Classic Tracks radio pundit and St. Louis Philharmonic Orchestra percusionist Robin Weatherall in St. Louis, MO.
Since moving to Wisconsin in 2002, Hall has performed regularly with ensembles led by saxophonist John Salerno of the University of Wisconsin--Green Bay, including the University of Wisconsin--Green Bay Faculty Jazz Ensemble. Hall has also performed regularly with saxophonist Bob Spahn's group in Appleton, and most recently with Appleton drummer Jason Van Risen's jazz ensembles. In addition, Hall led his own jazz ensemble in Green Bay, The Midnight Blue Quartet, and has performed with various musicians in Northeast Wisconsin such as pianist Chris Salerno, trumpeter Tom Pfotenhauer, vibraphonist Terrence O'Grady, and bassists Craig Hanke and John Gibson. Hall has also performed as a lutenist with the Early Music Collegium led by Terrence O'Grady and with the Wyndsong Recorder Consort.
