DESCRIPTION: This training is an opportunity to learn about and prepare for a contested CHIPS Termination of Parental Rights (TPR) trial, enhancing the caseworker’s understanding and confidence. The two days will be spent examining an actual case of each participant, working through fears about cross examination with the help of colleagues. Each participant will be videotaped testifying once at the beginning of the first day and again in the middle of the second day. In a supportive environment, the group will evaluate the presentations and work toward improvement.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the end of this training, participants will:

  • Be able to critically examine your own TPR case

  • Recognize the key concepts of the required proof for the case

  • Explain how to organize cases in a way that fulfills all statutory obligations

  • Identify how to determine if converting the case from involuntary to voluntary is possible

TARGET AUDIENCE: This training is designed for caseworkers who have current responsibilities in planning for a CHIPS Termination of Parental Rights or who are in the process of a TPR case.

Note: This workshop is limited to ten participants. You will be asked to provide court reports and return conditions of your own TPR case (with names changed). For this training, you must dress for two days of courtroom appearances.
