DESCRIPTION : To effectively do case planning and work with children and adolescents, it is essential to have a basic understanding of the mental health issues that can affect this population. This training provides basic knowledge about these issues that a caseworker can use to facilitate joint planning with families, schools, and other professionals involved in a case.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  • An understanding of the diagnostic categories that are commonly found in children in the CPS and Juvenile Justice system, such as mood disorders, Attention Deficit Disorders, Reactive Attachment Disorder, etc.

  • An understanding about the unique ways mental health issues manifest in children and youth

  • Discussion of a systematic and developmental perspective for understanding mental health needs of children

TARGET AUDIENCE: Child welfare professionals who want to increase their understanding of mental health issues regarding children in order to appropriately case manage mental health service needs.
