Creative Case Planning for Parents with Depression

Once you reach the WCWPDS website, you will click on the “PDS Online Go” button in order to login and register for pre-service, foundation and special skills/topics training sessions. Once you reach the PDS Online system, you will be able to search training sessions by title or locator number. A locator number is identified below for each training session to streamline your search process on PDS Online. DESCRIPTION : Working with families where one of the caregivers suffer from a mental illness can be particularly challenging for the child welfare social worker. Often it is difficult to engage parents, keep them motivated and focused while keeping ourselves motivated, plus always keeping “child safety” the priority. This workshop will focus on those challenges and provide you an opportunity to problem solve around those issues. We will focus specifically on parents that suffer from depression. This workshop will consist of lecture, small and large group discussion, and case planning.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
- Understand the critical issues facing parents with mental illness and the scope of the issue
- Identify the symptoms and challenges of depression
- Understand the impact of depression on children (cognitively, behaviorally, environmentally, and socially).
- Differentiate between mood disorders (depression) and personality disorders.
- Discuss and evaluate several techniques that have had success with this population
- Demonstrate an understanding of the challenge by developing a creative case plan from your own caseload.
TARGET AUDIENCE: Child welfare professionals whose caseload includes parents with depression and other mental health diagnoses and who want to increase their skills in working with this population
