ICN/Hum Dev/Dying,
Death, & Loss/Mune 2006
Discussion
Question 1: Due May 25, 2006
Please note that there are two parts to this assignment.
1. For
our discussion, we will be using the theoretical framework of the death
system in under to understand our cultural reactions to death as well as
the reactions of other cultures. The
discussion of the death system may be found in Chapter 4 of Corr,
Nabe & Corr (2005). Focus in on your own ethnic, religious,
familial or economic background, and describe a particular death-related ritual
or practice and/or attitude (s). How would these rituals help (or hinder) you
and your family during a time of loss?
2. Now turn to the description of the Hmong death-rituals and practices that are described in Bliatout (1993). Looking at the three main components of the death system (1)people and places; 2)times, objects and symbols; 3)functions), identify at least one component of the Hmong death system that fits into each of these categories. What aspects of the Hmong rituals struck you as most difficult to understand, or odd? What aspects of your own rituals (as described in Part 1) would be most difficult for the Hmong to understand?
Your typed response to this assignment should be approximately two pages long with an additional reference page written in APA style.
