Course Description

The purpose of this course is to provide students with an understanding of the evolution of western popular music since 1955 with emphasis on its stylistic development and its relationship to society.  The course focuses on American and British popular music from the mid-1950s through the early 1990s with some discussion of African and African-American antecedents from the early 20th century as well as more recent popular music.
