Literature and Styles in Music I
Course Goals
- To develop an understanding of:
- the historical development and social context of western art music
from Antiquity to 1700
- major styles and genres of Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance and
Early Baroque Music
- major composers, theorists and works of the Ancient, Medieval,
Renaissance and Early Baroque Period
- the basic theoretical and analytical approaches employed in the
analysis of music from these periods
- To demonstrate a basic understanding of modal Renaissance
counterpoint through the composition of a two-part setting of a Sanctus in 16th century
style
- To develop ear-training and sightsinging skills related to the
major styles of Medieval, Renaissance and Early Baroque music.
