  • Christian Moore - Why Try? Overcoming Poverty, Violence and Failure

    Christian Moore will talk about the origins of poverty, violence and failure as he experienced them growing up as one of twelve children on the outskirts of Baltimore.  He will then address the principles that help people overcome crushing social circumstances every day.  His hope-filled message will change how each member of the audience sees themselves and their power to change the lives of youth. Christian Moore is the founder of WhyTry?  Christian is an internationally renowned author, speaker and advocate for at-risk youth.  The WhyTry Program he authored has proven to be one of the most effective ways to teach the critical social and emotional skills that determine the success and happiness of individuals facing life’s challenges.

  • Mark Berends, Ph.D., sponsored by REL Midwest at Learning Point Associates -
    Connecting Research to Practice:  Addressing Student Achievement Gaps

    Dr. Berends’ presentation will go over the landscape of research on achievement gaps, highlighting his own work that examined patterns of achievement gaps in math over time and their relationship to school and student characteristics. Dr. Berends is the director of the Center for Research on Educational Opportunity at the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Berends also directs the National Center on School Choice, funded by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES), and is vice president of the American Education Research Association’s Division on Educational Policy and Politics. Dr. Berends has an extensive background in research on student achievement gaps.
