About Phi Eta Sigma

Green Bay Chapter

The Phi Eta Sigma chapter of the university was started on March 16, 1992 under the direction of Dr. Mike Murphy. It is the oldest organization on the university.

Phi Eta Sigma places high emphasis in doing things for the community. Twice a school year, one in the fall and once in the spring, members of Phi Eta Sigma pick up trash on State Highway 54 just outside of New Frankin as a participant of Adopt a Highway. Phi Eta Sigma also purchases and wraps gifts in part with the Salvation army to provide Christmas presents for a local family.

The fee to be a member of Phi Eta Sigma is a one-time fee of $45. The national membership fee of $25 pays for an academic key or tie tac, membership certificate, and a copy of the national magazine, Forum of Phi Eta Sigma. The fee also pays a portion of the expenses for a chapter delegate to attend the national convention; and a portion goes to the Founders Fund, which provides approximately eighty-two $1,000 awards and twenty-nine $2,000 scholarships each year to members of Phi Eta Sigma for undergraduate study. Five $4,000 scholarships are also available for the first year of graduate study. Additional information about scholarships may be obtained from the "Scholarships" section of this web site. The local fee is used to fund social, educational, and community events that the organization holds throughout the year.

National Honor Society

Phi Eta Sigma is a national honor society for first-year college students with less than 32 credits. Our goal is to encourage and reward academic excellence among first-year students in institutions of higher learning.

The oldest and largest freshman honor society, Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society was founded at the University of Illinois on March 22, 1923, and now has more than three hundred chapters throughout the United States and more than 700,000 members.

Phi Eta Sigma was voted membership into the Association of College Honor Societies in 1937. Only three societies have had longer continuous membership.

Induction is an outward recognition of personal accomplishment and serves as an incentive for continued high scholarship. It provides members the opportunity to meet freshman scholars from all academic disciplines on their campuses and to join them in promoting academic excellence. Members may apply for scholarships available from national and from local chapters.

Membership in Phi Eta Sigma identifies its members to employers, professional and graduate schools as persons of superior academic ability and performance.
