PHUTURE PHOENIX AWARDS/HONORS
Replication of
Phuture Phoenix
Phuture Phoenix has been successfully replicated at two institutions of
higher education. The first was the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire,
called
BluGold Beginnings. This project was conducted as a part of the
Wisconsin College Access Challenge Grant sponsored in part by Great
Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation. In May of 2010, over 1,000
5th graders participated in the campus field trip day at UW-Eau Claire.
In 2010, Phuture Phoenix was transported to Western
Washington University by Cyndie Shepard, co-founder of Phuture Phoenix.
The program is called
Compass2Campus
in Bellingham, WA and continues to serve high-risk students
building college awareness in the state of Washington.
Also in
2010, Phuture Phoenix received another Wisconsin College Access
Challenge Grant sponsored in part by Great Lakes Higher Education
Guaranty Corporation to replicate the program at a third site, Silver Lake College, in
Manitowoc, WI.
2009 Wisconsin
College Access Challenge Grant
Phuture Phoenix was selected in spring of 2009 for replication on
another college campus through funding provided by the Wisconsin College
Access Challenge Grant and the Great Lakes Higher Education
Guaranty Corporation. The University of
Wisconsin-Eau Claire was selected as the recipient of funding to expand
pre-college awareness programs on its campus. UW-Eau Claire’s program,
Blugold Beginnings, will replicate the successful Phuture Phoenix
program to encourage young at-risk students to pursue higher education.
2008 Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction
Program of
Distinction
In the fall of 2008, Phuture Phoenix was recognized as a
Wisconsin Program of Distinction by the
Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction PK-16 Leadership Council. This honor recognizes Phuture Phoenix as a model program for the state
of Wisconsin and others as a means to improve attendance and academic
achievement for students in Northeast Wisconsin. The award was presented on October 15, 2008 in Madison, WI at the Wisconsin
PK-16 Leadership Council Meeting.
2007 Wisconsin Higher Education Day Award
Presented by the Wisconsin Secretary of State, this award
acknowledges Phuture Phoenix for leadership in promoting higher
education in Wisconsin. It was presented by Wisconsin, Secretary of
State, Doug La Follette on October 9, 2007, Phuture Phoenix Field Trip
Day at the University of Wisconsin –Green Bay.
2004 Ann Lydecker Diversity in Education Award
Presented by the Wisconsin State Council on Affirmative Action,
this award recognizes Phuture Phoenix for excellence, resourcefulness
and innovation in advancing diversity in the state. Phuture Phoenix was
the first organization to be awarded this distinguished honor, now
presented annually across the state.
