The University's obligations to students with disabilities Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) mandate that students with disabilities have equal access to education. It is the responsibility of everyone on campus, under the leadership of Lynn Niemi Coordinator of Disability Services, to see that we are in compliance. Lynn's specific responsibilities are to review disability documentation and determine accommodations needed to "level the playing field" for students with disabilities.
If you have a disability and would like more information regarding the Disability
Services Office, please visit the Disability Services Web Page.
You will need to bring in appropriate documentation from a qualifying professional
to Lynn Niemi so she can determine accommodations needed.
At the beginning of each semester, students who are registered in the Disability
Services Office will obtain an Accommodation Request form to hand deliver to
each of their professors/instructional staff. This form will identify the accommodations
for the student that are appropriate, given the documentation of the disability.
If a student requests an accommodation to a faculty member and does not have
an Accommodation form, please refer the student to the Disability Services Office
(Student Services 1500). If the student or faculty member has any questions
regarding the recommended accommodation, please contact Lynn Niemi at 465-2841.
Do not deny or change an accommodation before
discussing it with Lynn. Denying or altering an accommodation can put you
and the University at risk for a potential law suit. Also please remember that
information about a student's disability is confidential. Please do not discuss
or announce the student's disability or accmmodations to the class. For more
information on faculty responsibility pertaining to disability services, please
visit Disability Services Information for Faculty.
It is important that we all work together to ensure that students with disabilities
have equal access to education. If you have any questions, please contact the
Disability Services Office at 465-2841 or e-mail Lynn at dis@uwgb.edu. The office
is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m, Monday through Friday, during the academic year.
Thank you for your help and understanding of the importance of these procedures.
