Spring 2014

"ISSEI Conference"

Grant in Aid of Research

Final Report: "Thanks to the Research Council’s Grants in Aid of Research, I was able to attend the 2014 ISSEI Conference (International Society of the Study of European Ideas) in Porto, Portugal. I have been a manuscript and book reviewer for ISSEI for over 10 years and thus involved with the Society and its journal, The European Legacy, but had never been able to attend the conference. Prof. Hans Rindesbacher (Pomona College) invited me to participate in a workshop that he was organizing for this conference. Since I planned to be in Europe during the summer anyway, this was the perfect opportunity for me to attend the conference. With $900, I was able to pay the registration fee, rent a car to drive to Porto, Portugal and stay in a hotel during the conference. The conference was very rewarding and my presentation in particular was quite successful. I had two invitations to give my talk at other universities in the U.S. and was asked if I would like to have my presentation considered for publication in The European Legacy. However, a revised version of my paper had already been accepted for publication in a different journal, so I had to decline the offer. In all, I was able to present at the conference, make connections with colleagues around Europe and meet with the editors and organizers of the conference and the journal with the hopes of continuing as a reviewer."
