Grants for Integrating Research and Teaching

2008 -2009 Academic Year
Request for Proposals

 Due:  TBA

OPPORTUNITY

The Research Council at UW-Green Bay is seeking to fund proposals for research activities integrating scholarly work and teaching.  Grants of up to $1500 are available to assist faculty in research projects carried out in collaboration with students.

All faculty are eligible to receive funding.  Funds may not be used for travel or for payment of student workers.  Funding levels depend on the scope of the project proposed and the number of students involved in the project. The likelihood of funding is enhanced if the proposal clearly demonstrates long-term practical student research experience.  Priority may be given to faculty members who have not received recent Research Council funding from this program.

GOAL

This grant opportunity is designed to acknowledge and encourage collaborative research between UW-Green Bay faculty and students. Requests should focus on how research projects will offer a meaningful, significant mentorship experience for students involved in collaborative research with faculty.

The Proposal (Overview)

Proposals should be no more than five pages in length and must include a budget identifying how the award will be used.  A statement of the potential educational impact for students involved in the research should be included.  If other sources of funding will be sought or have already been secured, please include the pertinent information in your proposal. A brief summary of the project’s impact on both faculty and student participants must be sent to the Institute for Research upon completion of the project.

Proposal Components

Cover page

The cover page template is found on the Research Council web page at www.uwgb.edu/rc/PIcoverGIRT.doc. Grant proposals must contain an appropriate cover page.

Project Narrative

A proposal narrative should state the need and the nature of the research activity, a description of project activities and anticipated outcomes, an overview of the work plan with particular attention to the number of students expected to participate in the project and their anticipated roles, method of assessment and evaluation, and manner of dissemination of research findings.  Maximum length:  Five (5) double-spaced pages.

Because the reviewers will make their decision based on the narrative, the narrative should be organized in the following manner, preferably with clear section headings:

 Statement of Need/Problem

The proposal should describe the research problem and should include evidence of a thorough literature review, as well as evidence that requested equipment, supplies, etc. are not already currently available.

Description of Project Activities and Outcomes

The proposal should clearly state the goals of the project. Goals should be attainable, concrete, and measurable in some fashion.  Proposals with qualitative measurements are acceptable.

Overview of Work Plan

Author/s must include a work plan that details major activities employed in the pursuit of desired outcomes. The plan should include a timeline that identifies responsibilities for each student.

Assessment/Evaluation

A description of the techniques used to measure research outcomes should be provided.  These outcomes may be either qualitative or quantitative measurements.  The Research Council is prepared to entertain a wide range of assessment strategies to determine the efficacy of research in an objective manner.

 Dissemination

The proposal should describe the plan to disseminate research outcomes to the council and to the institution. The author/s should include in this section a commitment to producing and submitting an outcome report to the Research Council.

Budget of Expenses

Submit a budget of expenses (budget template available at: www.uwgb.edu/rc/IbudgetGIRT.doc.  Include a summary of how the funds will be spent.
