The Regional Center for Mathematics and Science at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay is a six-week residential pre-college program held at UW-Green Bay during June and July. The academic program is designed to enhance and enrich your understanding of science, mathematics, and the nature of scientific research. The Center's emphasis is on the health sciences. Careers in medicine, nursing, physical theraphy, medical research, and the like, will be explored.

The Center is a joint project of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and the U.S. Department of Education. A staff of 23 instructors, faculty, counselors, residence hall assistants, graduate and administrative staff will serve the needs of 50 participants, selected from a six-state midwest region. Students are fully supervised 24 hours a day.

UW-Green Bay's program is one of 129 pre-college math and science centers nationwide funded by the U.S. Department of Education. The UW-Green Bay Center is one of 15 in a six-state area that makes up federal region V: Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Because of its joint ownership, the Regional Center is accountable to both the University and the federal government for its program activities, student outcomes, and fiscal management.

FEES

Center students pay no fees. All Center participants have all of their expenses paid for by the federal government. Not only are their expenses covered (instructional costs, food, housing, recreational expenses, etc.), but students receive a weekly stipend while attending the Center. Students are free to spend this stipend in any way they choose.

TRANSPORTATION

Center students pay no transportation costs. Round-trip costs are paid for by the Center. Students are transported by various means (car, van, bus, plane) to campus, depending on distance, programmatic convenience, costs, and parental preference.

PROGRAM TIMELINE

RCMS students arrive on campus in late June, move into their dorms, and meet program staff and other participants. Most of the first week is spent in group orientation activities. These activities acquaint the students with the campus, help them become comfortable with other RCMS participants and staff, and assess their academic abilities for proper course placement.

A regular schedule of course and lab work and local and area field trips fill the second and third weeks of their Regional Center experience. On July 4, RCMS students and Center staff join the day-long Green Bay community Independence Day celebration.

During the fourth week, Center participants and staff live at the Hunt Hill Sanctuary, an outdoor camp near Sarona, WI. During the fifth and final week, students are back on campus and follow their regular schedule of course and lab work and field trips. The program is finalized with a final banquet for students and their families.
