FEDERAL VETERAN BENEFITS
To receive federal veterans' educational benefits, student-veterans must be certified by both the Veterans Administration (VA) and the UW-Green Bay Veterans' Office. Mobilizations or other forms of active duty may extend the "delimiting" date for federal benefits. The St. Louis VA Regional Office, which certifies veterans' eligibility for benefits, has a toll free number for individual educational inquiries (1-888-442-4551 or 1-888-GI-BILL1). The web site is www.gibill.va.gov.

New Student-Veterans
Most new students applying for GI Bill benefits must use the VA Form 22-1990, Application for VA Education Benefits, to get their entitlement started. The Form is available from the UW-Green Bay Veteran's Coordinator, from your local County Veteran's Service office, or it may be printed from the VA web-site. The additional documentation required depends on which entitlement (i.e., Chapter) you are eligible for. See below for Chapter-specific requirements.

Verification-GI Bill
Most veterans must verify their enrollment with the VA each month. Failure to do so will delay benefits. For monthly verification of enrollment, either call 1-877-823-2378 or log in to the VA's WAVE - WEB Automated Verification of Enrollment.

Application Requirements By Chapter

Chapter 30, Montgomery GI Bill (Active-Duty) veterans applying for the first time will need the Application (VA Form 22-1990) and a copy of their DD-214 (Certificate of Discharge); the VA prefers to have Copy 4. Include a copy of the Kicker, if eligible. Bring the documents described above to the Veteran's Coordinator who will then certify your enrollment and forward it to the Veterans Administration Regional Office.

Chapter 31, Disabled Veteran's Vocational Rehabilitation Program students initiate their benefits by coordinating with the County Veterans Service Office and the VA. The VA sends the school an Authorization (VA Form 28-1905) for each eligible Disabled Veteran. UW-Green Bay then provides enrollment certification to the VA for each term.

Chapter 33, Post 9/11 GI Bill is for individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate service on or after September 11, 2001, or individuals discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days. You must have received an honorable discharge to be eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill. The Post-9/11 GI Bill will become effective for training on or after August 1, 2009. This program will pay eligible individuals tuition and fees (paid directly to the school), a monthly housing allowance and an annual stipend of 1,000 for books and supplies. Please see details at the Federal Veteran Affairs website: www.gibill.va.gov.

Chapter 35, Survivor/Dependents' Educational Assistance Program students initiate their benefits by coordinating with their County Veterans Service Office and UW-GB. The application (VA Form 22-5490) is available from the UW-Green Bay Veteran's Coordinator, your local County Veteran's Service office, or it may be printed from the VA web-site. Give the required documents described above to the Veteran's Coordinator who will then certify your enrollment and forward to the Veterans Administration Regional Office.

Chapter 1606, Selected Reserve GI Bill (Reserve and Guard) students will need to get a Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE, DD Form 2384) from their unit and then complete the Application (VA Form 22-1990). Include a copy of the Kicker, if eligible. Give the required documents described above to the Veteran's Coordinator who will then certify your enrollment and forward it to the VA Regional Office.

Transfer Students (Previously Certified under Chapters 30, 31, 35, and 1606) -- Veterans who transfer to UW-Green Bay and who received benefits while attending other schools must coordinate with the UW-Green Bay Veteran's Office. They must complete the "Change" (VA Form 22-1995B) and get re-certified before they may resume benefits.

Federal Tuition Assistance thru the DANTES Tuition Assistance Management Program (TAMP) involves processing tuition assistance reimbursement due for personnel assigned to active duty Army, Army Reserve and Air Force Reserve.  For more information contact your unit education officer.
