Present: Austin, Kaye, Kersten, Lockard, Nielsen,
Sanchez, Smith, Walter
Chair Walter called the meeting to order at 12:30 p.m.
1. Introductions: Omar Sanchez was formally introduced
and welcomed to the unit as Everingham’s sabbatical replacement
2.1 Sorrows:
Tony
Galt’s bicycle accident and the prognosis and experience of his recovery to
date were discussed at length. The Unit
wishes Tony, Janis and Alex the best in these difficult times and looks forward
to a timely and full recovery for Tony.
2.2 Celebrations:
Kersten and Nielsen will be teaming on a portion of Kersten’s public
education grant.
Mike
Mailander, a recent SCD graduate, will be studying public policy at
UW-Milwaukee.
Nielsen
announced a new book contract for a Helen Keller reader with NYU Press.
3. Advising : Walter
and Austin will share advising responsibilities in Galt’s absence.
4. Budget: The
current budget will support historic levels of travel expenditures, but all
should anticipate stricter travel and cost reimbursement approvals, probably
linked to published program participation.
Availability of additional funding from grant overhead, and prospects
for preserving such funds across budget years, were also discussed.
5. Leaves and
Reassignments: Note was made of Lockard’s negotiations with Houghton Mifflin to
allow him to devote full time to completing his world history text during spring
2004. Staffing adjustments to support
this seem feasible.
6. Staffing
Priorities: Walter noted and discussion ensued regarding an administrative
initiative to prioritize replacements as open positions arise.
The meeting adjourned at 1:40 P.M.
