SCD MINUTES of 30 November 2000

Convened at 11, Adjourned at 12:15

Present: Lynn Walter (Chair), Larry Smith, Craig Lockard, Andy Austin, Mark Everingham, Tony Galt, and Harvey Kaye (Secretary for the day).

Excused: Kim Nielsen

1. Celebrations:

a.   Kim and Andy received UWGB Faculty Research Grants.  Kim received support to deliver a conference paper in April, and Andy to commence a new research project.

b.   Lynn Walter’s book - Women’s Rights: A Global View - has been been published by Greenwood Press.

c.   Our graduate Jason Hellwig reports that he taken a position with the New York law firm Winston & Strawn.  Also, he published an article - “The Retreat of the State?” - in the Wisconsin International Law Journal.

2.  Scheduling Principles:

Harvey reported on the UC’s sentiments regarding the proposed Scheduling Principles and proposed possible models for scheduling.  Lynn indicated her reservations about the model schedules…  and other SCD faculty chimed in.  Lynn then noted that more Monday/Wednesday slots would be good.  But Harvey replied by moving “SCD supports the status quo (viz. Schedule F), with the proviso that the University set aside the late Friday afternoon slots for meeting times”.  Craig seconded the motion.  And the motion passed 7-0.  We then proceeded to discuss the Scheduling Principles themselves.  Discussion revealed concerns about the vague wording of Item #2, and Lynn agreed to convey our reservations.

3.  Election of SCD Faculty Senate Representative:

Lynn nominated Tony (the incumbent).  Craig seconded the nomination. Comments were heard comparing our election to ongoing events in Florida…  A written ballot was held.  And Tony was re-elected!

4.  Law and Justice Emphasis Discussed:

Andy presented his ideas and plan for the redevelopment of the Law and Social Change emphasis as the “Law and Justice Studies” emphasis.  A good critical discussion ensued.  Andy impressed us with his thinking and projected new courses, but in the best traditions of the unit we expressed our various enthusiasms and reservations.  Andy voiced his appreciation and promised to continue working on the plan.

5.  Post-Tenure Reviews:

Lynn noted that senior faculty will soon need to convene to pursue post-tenure reviews.  We will select a date for the event via e-mail.

6.  Gathering to Discuss Intro Courses:

Lynn reminded us that we had resolved to hold a gathering at which SCD faculty will present their syllabi from introductory courses (such as Varieties of World Culture, Intro to Sociology, Modern World History).  We agreed to meet on Friday, December 8th at 3pm at a site downtown.

Respectfully submitted,

Harvey J. Kaye, “Secretary for a day!”
