Meeting of Social Change and Development
11 a.m., December 14, 2000.

Present: Lynn Walter (chair), Andrew Austin, Mark Everingham, Tony Galt, Harvey Kaye, Kim Nielsen, Craig Lockard (minute taker)

Absent: Larry Smith (out of town)

The first agenda item was a consideration of the revised Law and Justice track. Andy Austin had earlier submitted a draft. After some discussion, we agreed to make the following changes: add 448-206 (History of the U.S. 1865-present) as a recommended supporting course and 778-312 (Community Politics) as an upper level elective; drop 448-503 (Political and Social History of the Modern U.S.) and 778-410 (Intergovernmental Relations) as upper level electives. It was also agreed that Lynn and Andy would look into the possibility of adding one of Lisa Poupart's courses on American Indian Justice Studies to the track. We also discussed Andy's proposed new course in Critical Justice Studies. After some vigorous and thoughtful debate, we agreed to support the course description with a slight rewording. Andy was encouraged to provide Form As and Xs for our next meeting.

The second agenda item was a request by Francis Carleton (who is assigned 4/7 to SCD) to revise course periodicity, specifically, to alternate the teaching of Women and the Law with 778-312 (Community Politics), making them both biannual rather than annual courses. Because enrollments seem to support this request and 778-312 seemed to fit closely with SCD's approach and interests, we agreed to support the change.

In concluding the meeting at noon, we agreed to meet early in January to discuss whether any changes should be made in the other tracks.
