Social Change and Development meeting
October 19, 2000
Convened in Rose Hall 324f at 11 a.m.
Present: Austin, Everingham , Galt(minutes),  Lockard, Nielsen, Smith, Walter (chair)
Unable to attend: Kaye
  1. The minutes of 9/28/00 meeting were approved.
  2. Diana Borrero-Lowe from the American Intercultural Center made a presentation on the center.
  3. Celebration: Larry Smith noted that Gary Garriott (who was a graduate student at UWGB, but who interacted with several of us regularly) has been named Outstanding Alumnus of the Year. He will be here to receive the award Friday, November 3.
  4. Budget matters:
    1. Tony will approach Joan Robb about funding for the purchase of 6-8 feature length Italian films for 875-333 next semester.
    2. After discussions with Chris Terrien, Lynn reported that we could probably spend on the order of $750 apiece on travel.
    3. OAS trip: We agreed that Mark's $750 share would go toward this trip (which is to Argentina this year and therefore more expensive than usual). Registration fees will be defrayed by the student participants, but if enrollment falls short SCD agreed to commit another $300 for this purpose. If enough students enroll to cover the fees, Mark may use the $300 to further defray his travel expenses.
  5. Lynn announced that the deadline for expressions of interest in summer teaching is 25 October.
  6. Time was spent reviewing details in the draft of the Program Development Plan, which is due in the end of October. A result of this discussion was the conclusion that we need to think for the longer range about marketing internships. Tony agreed to convene a subcommittee consisting of Francis, Larry, Andy, Mark, and Kim to do so in the near future.
  7. Tony reported on the Senate and GBTEACH-L discussions of the UWGB Learning Experience Report and University Committee proposal which derives from it. There was a consensus among SCD faculty members that workload issues have not yet been adequately addressed and that the Report seems to have lost, or back-burnered, the most interesting parts of the Compelling Idea discussion, i.e. Citizenship and Learning through Teaching.
