SCD Minutes

Date/Time: September 13, 2002, 2:00 pm

Present: Andrew (scribe), Andy, Craig, Kim, Larry, Lynn, Mark, and Tony.

1. SCD welcomed Andy to the unit. Warm fuzzies all around.

2. SCD welcomed Dean Blackshire-Belay. She spoke about her agenda, which appears concerned with general education and how to make things better with limited resources. Then she left.

3. Celebrations:

-     Craig signed a contract last spring with Oxford University Press to produce a brief history of Southeast Asia.

-     Andy signed a contract with Oxford University Press to publish Americans At Work: A History of Work and Workers.

-     Mark’s article "Negotiated Peace, Disputed Land: Conflict over Property Rights in Guatemala and South Africa" was published in The Journal for the Study of Peace and Conflict (2002/03 edition).

-     Larry was voted onto the Lake Michigan Forum Michigan Forum at its April 2002 meeting in Milwaukee. The forum provides public input to EPA on the Lake Michigan Lakewide Management Plan.

4. The unit’s budget is the same as last year’s budget, w/ approximately $700 per faculty member for S&E.

5. Questions: Should we set up a People Soft committee giving members access to the records of SCD majors? Should we appoint an SCD committee to look into it? Lynn is looking into it.

6. Approved to hire a part-time lecturer for Mark’s classes 2003-2004

-     World Politics (2 sections)

-     International Relations

-     Politics of Developing Areas

-     Political History of Modern Latin America

7. Internships

Andy comes with access to several internships: Heritage Hill, Neville Museum, and University Archives.

Question: do all internships go through Andrew or may faculty sponsor her/his own student? It is a matter of choice, but if it is more efficient to have them go through Andrew, he stands willing to help in this capacity.

Larry suggested that we work to encourage a culture of internships. Every one in attendance agreed.
