  1. Good News: Tony Galt is back! Much happiness. An essay by Andrew Austin is being translated by Pluto Press into German and will be published in Germany; he also authored a critical review essay entitled "Explanation and Responsibility: Agency and Motive in Lynching and Genocide" that will appear later this year in The Journal of Black Studies. Lynn Walter’s four book review essay appeared: “Bridges, Chasms, and Common Ground: Multicultural and Transnational Feminism,” Feminist Collections 25/1 (Fall 2003): 1-9; and “Refusing False Choices: Feminist Response to September 11,” Feminist Collections 25/1 (Fall 20030: 10-11. Andy Kersten authored a review of the film “Oh, Freedom After While,” Journal of American History 90/3 (December 2003): 1131-1132. Kim Nielsen’s essay “What’s a Patriotic Man to do? Patriotic Masculinities of the Post-WWI Red Scare,” appeared in Men and Masculinities 6/3 (January 2004): 240-253; and she reviewed books: Rethinking Helen Keller, The Women’s Review of Books, 21/4 (January 2004): 10-11; Deaf History and the U.S. Historical Narrative, Reviews in American History, 31 (December 2003): 596-602.
  2. Update on pay questions for 2004-5: Lynn reported that the Board of Regents has recommended a 1% salary increase based upon solid performance. We agreed that we are all solidly worthy of merit and will use the merit reviews last done of the whole unit. The next merit reviews will be cumulative.
  3. Report on Global Studies: Larry Smith updated the rest of the unit with the information that a subcommittee was formed at the last meeting of the global studies group in order to work on a global studies minor proposal. Larry chairs this subcommittee. They are starting to inventory potential campus resources (courses, people, etc) and are working on who will serve on the subcommittee.
  4. Discussion of Curriculum Development: The unit discussed curricular dreams and goals for the direction of the SCD curriculum. It was again agreed that the position proposal put forward previously regarding a social scientist of health issues is still a priority.
