Discussion of the Faculty Senate’s Proposed Code Change to UWGB 52.01, 53.01,
53.06
Professor
Abbott presented the University Committee’s reasoning for suggesting changes to
the UWGB code. The general idea to was to create a
role for faculty members, faculty governance, and Faculty Senate in the
development of new programs. In particular, the code change refers to the
development of minors outside budgetary units.
SCD faculty
members then discussed the proposed code change. After debating the merits and
problems with the proposed code changes as well as the idea of an independent
global studies minor,
three motions were suggested.
Motion 1:
Social Change and Development is committed to offering global studies and to
supporting global studies education and collaboration across the University.
Passed: 8-0-0
Motion 2:
Social Change and Development does not approve the creation of a global studies
minor independent of existing budgetary units.
Passed: 6-2-0
Motion 3:
Addition to code change.
Insert in 53.01 a section C so that the code reads:
53.01
Interdisciplinary Units
A. An interdisciplinary
unit shall consist of faculty members
from diverse disciplines, but with a shared problem orientation.
B. Recommendations
concerning the establishment, the merger, or
the discontinuance of interdisciplinary units can be initiated by the
faculty members concerned, the appropriate Dean(s), or the Provost/Vice
Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Such recommendations must be reviewed
by the faculty concerned, the Academic Affairs Council and the Personnel
Council, meeting jointly, and the University Committee, and shall
receive the approval of the appropriate Dean(s), the Faculty Senate, the
Provost/Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and the Chancellor, to be
transmitted to the President and the Board of Regents.
C. Budgetary units immediately affected will
have the right to consultation and approval regarding such minors.
