* A special issue of Voyageur Magazine focuses on Andy=s U.S. history project for teachers.

* Andy will also speak at a project director=s meeting in Washington, D.C..

* Kim Nielsen has been asked to give a keynote address at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C..

* SCD major Aaron Hulse has a paid position in the Russ Feingold Senate campaign.

* SCD students Anne Eckenrod and Jeriamiah Moore made Academic Excellence presentations.

2. Lynn suggested that SCD might want to participate in the Engaged Department program, which involves a June conference in Madison. Various faculty agreed that SCD should encourage civic engagement and service learning, but there was concern that participation in this program would require writing an action plan and funding participation in the week long workshop. We agreed to think about how to better integrate service activity into the program, and encourage students to become more active. We also agreed to consider placing more emphasis on internships. But we decided not to apply for the Engaged Department designation at this time.

3. We discussed the proposed Global Studies Program and how to make the SCD Global Studies emphasis more attractive. There was still considerable opposition to a stand-alone Global Studies minor but Larry Smith asked for more SCD collaboration to improve the proposal. To place the issue on the table, Harvey proposed that SCD pass a resolution supporting a stand-alone minor separate from SCD, seconded by Andy Kersten. But the majority sentiment was opposed to a stand-alone, unfunded program and, before any vote was taken, the motion was tabled pending further information.

On that note, the meeting adjourned.
