SCD MINUTES of 21 January 2005

Convened in MAC Hall Vista Conference Room

All Present: Lynn Walter (Chair), Craig Lockard, Andrew Austin, Larry Smith, Kim Nielsen, Tony Galt, Andy Kersten, and Harvey Kaye (Secretary for the day).

 

1. Celebrations!!!:

a.      Lynn Walter has published “Rødstrømpebevægelsen. Sex, kærlighed og politik i 1968,” in 1968, Dengang og Nu (Copenhagen: Museum Tusculanums Forlag, Københavns Universitet, 2004).

b.      Andrew Austin contributed four entries to the Encyclopedia of US Prisons and Correctional Facilities (Sage, 2004) and published “War Hawks and the Ugly American" and "Beyond the Oil Patch," in Devastating Society–The Neo-conservative Assault on Democracy and Social Justice (Pluto Press, 2005).

c.      Craig Lockard published 3 essays in the Berkshire Encyclopedia of World History (2005).

d.      Andy Kersten will deliver the talk "Untold Significance: A Commemorative History of Green Bay" as part of the Dean's Interdisciplinarity in Action program, to be held Tuesday, January 25, 2005.  Also, Andy announced that the second issue of Voyageur Magazine: Teachers' Edition came out two weeks ago.

e.      Harvey Kaye’s book The Powers of the Past (1991) has been translated and published in South Korea (Samin Books, 2004).

f.        SCD grad Matt Kittell has received his M.A. in Public Policy at the University of Maryland.  Matt emphasized energy issues in his studies.

g.      The SCD application to host a Visiting Fulbright Professor has gotten over another hurdle on its way to approval.

 

2. The Chair explained the new funding arrangement for the Extended Degree program and the Dean’s memo of January 20 in which it was announced that units will be afforded dollars for ad hoc positions, S&E, and/or research releases based on faculty participation in the program. 

 

3. Harvey announced that in honor of the conclusion of Andy Kersten’s Department of Education grant and 20 years of the Historical Perspectives Lecture Series the Center for History and Social Change is organizing a mini conference of sorts for 22-23 September 2005 built around the theme “American History, American Freedom.”  Speakers will be Eric Foner of Columbia University, Kriste Lindenmeyer of University of Maryland-Baltimore, Jeremi Suri of UW-Madison.  More details to follow…

 

4. The Chair presented the new class schedule proposed by the Campus Climate committee.  Discussion ensued…  While several faculty members welcomed the changes that would take place, others proclaimed their opposition, noting concern about the loss of Monday-Weds-Friday teaching opportunities.
