I. Celebration
·
First
and foremost, the SCD faculty members learned that Tony Galt was feeling better
and would return to Green Bay shortly.
·
Harvey
Kaye mentioned that he had recently been in Boston to tape a television show
about Thomas Paine and that he had also been in San Diego to deliver a keynote
address at a Thomas Paine Symposium.
·
Andrew
Austin told the group about an exciting new development led by the
Instructional Development Council to pilot freshman seminars.
·
Andrew
Kersten mentioned that his book Race,
Jobs, and the War (Illinois, 2000) will soon be published in paperback.
·
Larry
Smith declared the “Whose Land Is It? Symposium” a smashing success and
celebrated Mark Everingham’s efforts and accomplishments.
·
Kim
Nielsen told the group about the student-led vigil for Jordan following the
recent terrorist attacks.
·
The
group celebrated Professor Nielsen’s recent workshop titled “Teaching and
Personal Life.”
·
Lynn
Walter and Craig Lockard noted that two recent SCD graduates, Diane Sohr and
Julie ??, have moved onto professional training and graduate school.
II. Approval of Minutes from October
21, 2005 SCD Meeting
The SCD
faculty members unanimously approved the October 21, 2005 meeting minutes
contingent upon a handful of revisions to Everingham draft minutes.
III. Report from the SCD Senator
Kaye
discussed the recent change in code, the future of general education, and the
Chancellor’s dour report on the financial state of the University.
IV. Diversity Initiative
Kersten
discussed the University’s new diversity initiative. The crux of the matter
hinges on retirements. During a search or otherwise, a Unit can seek to add a
new faculty member with a diverse background. The Chancellor has agreed to
support that new hire for one to four years after which it is expected that
someone in the Unit would retire and that recent hire would then shift to that
open salary line.
V. Bachelor of Applied Studies
Proposal
Kersten
introduced the BAS proposal and encouraged those with comments and questions to
contact him directly. Kersten is currently serving on the planning group for
the BAS proposal.
VI. Proposed Global Studies Minor
SCD passed
unanimously the following resolution:
SCD
supports the Chair’s letter to the Dean and AAC about the Global Studies Minor
Proposal as an accurate representation of the Unit’s sentiments.
VII. Election of an Alternate
Senator
Kersten was
unanimously elected the alternate SCD Senator.
VIII. New Business
Kersten
related the sad news about the UW-Green Bay budget and the severe impact upon
instruction. The SCD faculty members also discussed course reassignments.
Finally, the Unit agreed to use some of its 150 funds to support the Center for
History and Social Change. For the next two years, the Unit will add $1500 to
the Center’s annual budget.
Respectfully
submitted,
Andrew E.
Kersten
