SCD MINUTES (Dec. 16, 2005)

The SCD faculty met on Friday, Dec. 16 at 2. All members were present.

1. We unanimously applauded the move to award our late colleague, Tony Galt, emeritus status at the winter commencement. We also discussed the memorial service to be held at the UWGB Ecumenical Center on Dec. 18, during which Profs. Walter, Lockard, and Smith will offer remarks and Prof. Kersten will serve as moderator.

2. We celebrated several achievements: Larry Smith received his 35th year of teaching at UWGB award, Craig Lockard his 30th, and Mark Everingham his 10th. We also congratulated Karen Dalke (who took over Tony’s classes in mid-semester) for winning a creative approach to teaching award. SCD student Brian Dimmer was accepted to Marquette University law school.

3. Our major business was a sad one: writing a position description for a replacement faculty to fill the slot of our much respected late colleague, Tony Galt. Profs. Austin, Walter, and Dalke will teach his spring courses. We discussed various needs and possibilities, among others: someone specialized in the “global south” or migration issues; the needs of the Anthropology program; the need to offer SCD 333, SCD 360, Varieties of World Culture, and medical anthropology (since Northeast Wisconsin is a major regional health center); the value of a faculty member who could develop ties with local minority communities; the value of someone with a political economy orientation.

After much debate we unanimously agreed on a position description that seeks an anthropologist who can teach Varieties of World Culture, Medical Anthropology, Myth Ritual and Religion, and interdisciplinary SCD courses, with preference for a specialist in the global south.

The meeting adjourned at 3.
