Minutes

 

 

Attending:  Andrew Austin, Lynn Walter, Craig Lockard, Larry Smith, Andy Kersten, Kim Nielsen, Mark Everingham, Harvey Kaye

 

1. Celebrations:

-          SCD graduate Jill Duquaine-Watson has completed her Ph.D. and has accepted a tenure track position at Texas Women’s University.

-          SCD graduate Jeremiah Bohr has been accepted and will start in fall 2006 in the Ph.D. program in Sociology at the University of Illinois-Champaign/Urbana.

-          SCD graduate Sam Shay will start in fall 2006 at the Ph.D. program in Sociology at Portland State University

-          Andrew Austin’s empirical article “Race and Lethal Forms of Social Control: A Preliminary Investigation into Execution and Self-Help In The United States, 1930-1964” has been accepted for publication in the international journal Crime, Law, and Social Change.  To be published 2006. His encyclopedia article “Tyranny and Dictatorship” will be published in the four-volume Routledge International Encyclopedia of Men and Masculinities (RIEMM) in 2007.

-          Women’s Studies student Jennifer Ernie has been selected to display her honors project (directed by Kim Nielsen) at the University of Wisconsin Posters in the Rotunda event at the state capital on April 25.

 

2. Senate Update:

Andy Kersten reported that the Senate discussed Global Studies.

 

3. New Business:

- The Report on Outside Activities is due April 30, 2006 to Andy Kersten.

- The monies generated by Nielsen & Walter by teaching in the ED/IDS program resulted in an additional $750/person for S&D. This results in $1875 total and must be spend by June 30th.

 

4. We spent substantial time discussing the position description and rationale for the position we plan to search for starting in fall 2006. New wording was approved 6 approved-0 no-1 abstention. The revised version will be submitted April 3.
