First Contact with Social Change and Development and Advising

Our Philosophy about Admission to Social Change and Development

The program currently has no minimum GPA requirements for admission. In fact, we welcome all who are interested and willing to undertake our course work and, unlike some other UWGB social science programs, we are philosophically opposed to excluding motivated students who do not have strong records. However, students should be forewarned that this is a very rigorous program that gives strong emphasis to writing and to theoretical understandings in the social sciences. We will let you in, and we will give you lots of personal attention if you want or need it, but you must be willing to work hard to succeed once you are admitted. We have high expectations of ourselves as scholars and teachers and of you as students.

Advising Sessions
Generally your first contact with our program will be an exploratory session with our advisor Tony Galt (whose mug is shown above). (You might also wish to talk to one of the other
faculty members of the program who you have come to know as the instructor of one of your courses. That instructor will eventually send you to Tony Galt to complete the advising process.) Professor Galt will ask you about your interests and explain how Social Change and Development might help meet them. He will also make some suggestions about other programs that might fit your interests better, if the fit with Social Change and Development is not clear.

If you are not sure what your interests are, he will try to help you clarify them, and explore with you how Social Change and Development might be relevant. He may use the on-line system to look over your records with you to help determine what you will need to take as a major or minor. Professor Galt will suggest background courses, an emphasis, and some choices of courses to take within the emphasis, and he will make sure that you know what prerequisites you need to take, and when to take them.  Any time thereafter, you are encouraged to return for advice about requirements, information about course and staff changes, or any other matters that come up.
