| An Independent Study (875-498) is a one on one experience with a professor in which you concentrate on the study of some particular topic that is of interest to you. Perhaps something in one of your classes has intensely interested you and you want to explore it further, or perhaps there is something that interests you for which there is no existing course. For these cases we make the Independent Study option available. The procedure for doing an Independent Study is generally to find a professor in Social Change and Development who has enough expertise to guide you. If you have no idea who that might be have a look at our faculty web page or ask someone on the faculty whom you know, who might be a good choice. Then you arrange with that person a project to do. This might involve a set of guided readings with the expectation of writing a paper, or perhaps some other kind of research, such as fieldwork. Independent Studies that receive Social Change and Development credit should be with Social Change and Development faculty members. |
