Rolfe E. White Scholarship in Social Work

History

The scholarship was established in 1999 by Rolfe E. White.  Dr. White was a professor at UW-Green Bay from January 1969 until he retired in May 1998.  As a teacher and social work professional, he initiated the Human Service major, the Social Work minor and the Social Work major which became accredited in 1987.

Dr. White's community service has consistently been on behalf of people in poverty in Brown County. He was instrumental in the founding of the NEW Community Clinic in 1970 serving as first chair, board director and volunteer worker with students. More recently Dr. White has served as the chair of the Task Force for the Homeless. He has served on numerous committees with the Task Force and has frequently testified on behalf of the homeless population. Dr. White has established this scholarship to assist future social workers in their work, and on behalf of low-income people.

The scholarship will be awarded each spring to a UW-Green Bay student who will be a senior in the social work major the following fall.

Criteria

Recipients must meet the following criteria:

  1. Good academic standing;
  2. Positive recommendations from social work faculty when the applications are reviewed;
  3. Written evidence of commitment to addressing poverty issues in future practice.

Applicants demonstrating financial need, in addition to meeting the above criteria, will be given priority.

Application and Selection Process

  1. In early spring, the Methods I instructors distribute information regarding the scholarship to the junior social work students.
  2. Students who meet the criteria and are interested in applying prepare a two-page written statement addressing written evidence of commitment to addressing poverty issues in future practice.
  3. Applications are submitted to the chair of the Social Work Professional Program.
  4. Faculty review the applications and, by consensus, determine who will receive the award.
  5. The Rolfe E. White scholarship is presented at the annual spring social work banquet.

Jean B. Weidner Scholarship

History

The Jean B. Weidner Scholarship Fund was established in 1991 by former UW-Green Bay Chancellor Edward Weidner, and Mrs. Jean B. Weidner, M.S.W. The scholarship was established for students pursuing a social work degree.

The Jean B. Weidner Scholarship will be awarded each spring to a University of Wisconsin-Green Bay student who will be a senior in the social work major the following fall.

Criteria

Recipients must meet the following criteria:
  1. Good academic standing; (3.5 minimum GPA)
  2. Positive recommendations from social work faculty when the applications are reviewed;
  3. Written evidence of the following:
  4. Significant accomplishments in the field practicum;
  5. Significant leadership positions/accomplishments in the past three years;
  6. Significant contributions to school/community in the past three years;
  7. Accomplishments in the areas of scholarship, leadership and professionalism.

Application and Selection Process
