Education: Ph.D. in Social Work (Michigan State University, East Lansing), MSW (University of Michigan, Ann Arbor) MPA (University of Michigan-Flint) and B.A. (University of Benin, Togo, West Africa).
Dissertation: Staff Attitudes and Beliefs about Family Involvement of Delinquent Children in Residual Programs.

Dr. Akakpo's teaching experience varies from teaching undergraduate courses in public relations and business ethics to master's level social work courses in settings from a small, private university to a large, public university. He is well-versed, with a full range of educational courses in public and social welfare policy as well as social work practice. His work experience is in the field of children, youth and families. He worked with the Michigan Department of Human Services' child welfare programs and Bureau of Juvenile Justice for over 11 years. He has a passion for making a difference in the lives of young people who for one reason or another made choices that brought them in conflict with law.

Dr. Akakpo's research interests are in the following areas: at-risk families and juvenile troubled youth; juvenile delinquents transitioning from residential facilities into the community; child abuse and neglect. He is also interested in international social work, policy, child labor and human trafficking as well as the role of non-governmental organizations (NGO's) in the Sub-Saharan African political process.
