What really defines a scholar/practitioner in the twenty-first century? This is a question of personal identity for Kevin Roeder. If not working on the frontlines with other practitioners applying scholarship, Kevin believes he should be behind the scenes working on their behalf through the facilitation of relevant practice-enhancing workshops and cultivating salient research. This drives his work in a circular pattern, integrating the teaching and learning process in the many arenas in which Kevin is involved.

Like the best teachers in the classroom, Kevin learns from students and believes that "an educator should never forget what it is like to be a student. Isolation in the "ivory tower" of academia is virtually non-existent as his exemplary service in "connecting learning to life" allows him to continually interface with issues of HIV/AIDS, Applied Ethics and Boundaries, and Diversity Appreciation. Specializing in "practical wisdom" with a "What to do on Monday?" approach built on a foundation of scholarship and direct clinical experience drives his teaching practice in the classroom and his interactions in the field.

His long-term commitment to numerous health and human service organizations, their practitioners and the individuals and families they work for, has allowed him to serve in multiple capacities, often within a single organization. As a more recent passion rising out of his real life clinical experiences, Kevin has taken the classroom to the practitioner by providing a variety of well-received, state-wide workshops. These professional ethics and boundaries trainings occur by invitation from a broad range of health and human service organizations.

Furthermore, Kevin's commitment to celebrating and embracing diversity has led to a variety of activities; most notable is the Diversity Mentorship Program for the Social Work Professional Program. This program utilizes diverse community practitioners who mentor social work faculty and students with a variety of purposes in mind.

Kevin's research and writing continue to make contributions and he has earned an on-going reputation for excellence in the classroom and in the field. For example, as one community practitioner and workshop participant recently noted of Kevin, "It takes a special gift to be a respected professor in your own homeland!"

The University of Wisconsin - Green Bay is a regional university with 5,500 students, impressive facilities and a fresh approach to student learning. Students benefit from "connecting learning to life" and practical, problem-solving experience in a community convenient to both the Door County resort area and the fast-growing economies of the Fox Valley corridor. With award-winning faculty, the acclaimed Weidner Center for the Performing Arts, premium student housing, a 270-acre arboretum, Division 1 athletics, a highly rated library, and new academic facilities in Lab Sciences and Mary Ann Cofrin Hall, the campus offers extras few can match.
