Salary Adjustment Policy for New Academic Staff
Annual salary adjustments for academic staff include a specific amount to recognize satisfactory performance (currently one-third of the pay plan package) plus an additional amount to recognize meritorious performance.
Salary adjustments for “meritorious performance” must be based on at least 12 months of service. Evaluation periods always begin on July 1 and end on June 30.
The second appointment period for all academic staff begins on July 1 of any given year.
Academic staff whose first appointment period begins between July 1 and December 31 shall be eligible to receive the portion of the pay plan package set aside to recognize satisfactory performance at the beginning of their second appointment period.
Academic staff whose first appointment period begins between January 1 and June 30 will not be eligible for any salary adjustment at the beginning of their second appointment period. They will, however, be eligible to receive satisfactory and meritorious performance salary adjustments at the beginning of their third appointment period.
Satisfactory Performance Evaluation Process. Satisfactory performance salary adjustments will be awarded upon the positive recommendation of the individual’s supervisor. Narratives should be brief but recorded on the standard academic staff evaluation form. Supervisors should also follow the standard academic staff evaluation process.
Disclosure. The final candidates for positions would be informed of the policy and its rationale during the campus interview process so that they know what to expect regarding salary increases. The hiring authority is obligated to inform the candidate of this policy during the salary negotiation process and should make every effort to ensure that the candidate understands the policy. A sentence referring to this policy will be included in all new appointment letters from the hiring authority beginning with contracts covering the 2003-2004 academic year.
