Same
Sex Marriage Debate
Tues., Oct. 16, 2007, 8-9:30pm
Know
before you go...
Is same-sex marriage good for society? The
ongoing debate over civil unions and same-sex
marriage often generates more heat than light.
Yet the debate cannot be ignored, as legislators
and voters around the country grapple with
whether and how to recognize same-sex relationships.
John Corvino and Glenn Stanton - two of the
nation’s leading and opposing voices
on this issue bring clarity and civility to
this otherwise divisive topic. Stanton, a same-sex
marriage opponent, argues that such marriages
would erode our understanding of humanity by
treating male or female as optional for the
family. Corvino, a same-sex marriage advocate,
argues that recognizing same-sex unions would
be good not only for gay people, but also for
society at large, since society has an interest
in promoting happy, stable, and loving relationships.

"Last
Words"
by Ken Carnes
Tues., Nov. 1, 2005, 8pm
Know
before you go...
Critically acclaimed actor and playwright,
Ken Carnes, presents "Last Words":
his lauded solo-play showcasing the hearts,
minds, and voices of society's condemned. Carnes,
a successful dramatist and avid researcher,
developed this singular program by gathering
facts, opinions, and stories directly from
death-row inmates, whose collective persona
he now adopts on-stage. Carnes portrays a man
seeking redemption, utilizing a montage of
quotes--sometimes, the very Last Words--of
hundreds of death-row inmates. The audience
takes on the role of jury, tasked with judging
Carnes' story. The show concludes with an interactive
discussion, wherein the audience debates, and
ultimately decides, what should be done with
him. This discussion typically engenders passionate
dialogue on all sides of a variety of issues,
including capital punishment, philosophy, psychology,
and politics.
