ORG FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions
Starting a Student Organization

What is a student organization?
An "org" is any formalized group made up mostly of currently enrolled students and is controlled and directed by students, whose purpose is related to student life on campus and is consistent with the mission of UW-Green Bay, in which each member has the right to intellectual freedom and the right to be heard, in which there is an environment where students develop a commitment to learning, AND in which the students have an opportunity to develop new personal relationships, skills, and self understanding.

How do you start an org?
Say you and a bunch of friends have a cool idea for a new organization, where do you go from there? Well, the first thing you should do is come and talk to the Office of Student Life staff! They will give you the information you need to start an organization, which means REGISTERING.

How do you register as a student organization?
First, visit this web page: http://www.uwgb.edu/stulife/orgs/register.htm .  Enter in the names and contact info (including a correct email address that will be checked by the individuals frequently) of at least two officers who will have responsibility for your organization's funds, and the information for your advisor (who must be a UW-GB faculty or staff member).

Second
, each fund officer and advisor listed will receive an email asking them to visit a web site, review the contract there and click the button agreeing to the terms. At least 2 fund officers and the advisor must complete this step.

Third, every year we needed at least two officers to go through an Org Orientation process.  This year we provided an orientation on April 22, 2008.  If they missed that, we still need them to instead complete a D2L quiz that they need 12 out of 13 to pass.

Fourth, we also require that each org re-registering must submit a Community Service Form and a Membership list.  Also to help advertise annual events on campus, we have available the Org Events Form that can be filled out, so events will get placed in the Daily Planners available in the Bookstore.

What's a mission statement?
A mission statement is the statement of purpose for your organization. It should provide a brief synopsis of what your org is all about. For instance, if you wanted to start an org to help raise awareness of the benefits of iguana wrangling, you might formulate a mission statement something like:

"The purpose of Iguana Raisers of America is to raise awareness of the sublime nature of our verdant and spiny amigos. IRATE sponsors fund raising events to procure bucks to help acquire hot-rocks for indigent iguanas and to help them emigrate back to their homeland in South America."

Your mission statement must comply with the registration guidelines listed on the UW-Green Bay Student Organization Registration Form, which your officers will receive in their confirmation email after you enter their contact information on the registration web page. In order to be recognized as an official student organization on the UW-Green Bay campus, your org's purpose must be in agreement with the educational mission of UW-Green Bay. [IRATE would probably be denied org status on this account. Very sad.]

Are there any restrictions on membership?
University policy, as well as state and federal laws, prohibit discrimination on the basis of race, color, ethnic origin, creed, physical or mental disability, sexual orientation, political affiliation, veteran status, sex, age, marital status, arrest or conviction record, or national origin. University-affiliated groups may not discriminate on these prohibited ground in selecting, pledging, or initiating new members or in selecting officers or providing any aid, benefit, or service.
