Documenting the American South

Hosted by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, this site has documents, books, photographs, oral interviews, and other resources for studying southern history. It is designed for students and teachers at all levels.

Edsitement

This is an excellent resource for teachers. The Web site has lesson plans and other resources.

Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History

The Gilder Lehrman Institute web site has tons of information, documents, lesson plans, and resources for historians, history teachers, and history students. It is one of the best web site for American history.

Also visit the Gilder Lehrman Institute's History Now online journal at www.historynow.org.

Historic Audio Archives

This site contains audio files of notable Americans.

History’s Best on PBS

This Web site contains links to all of PBS’s documentaries and specials on American history. Nearly all sites have primary sources, historical essay, biographies, timelines, classroom materials, and lesson plans.

History Cooperative

This innovative Web site currently provides access to eight major historical journals including the Journal of American History, the American Historical Review, the History Teacher, and Common-Place.

History Matters

This Web site is designed for high school and college teachers of U.S. History. It has a terrific collection of primary documents and resources for teaching history.

History News Network

All the news that is fit to print and read – for historians, that is. Or as the folks at HNN say “because the past is the present and the future, too.” This interesting and relevant site has current historical and historiographical debates. A truly wonderful tool.

History/Social Studies Web Site for K-12 Teachers

This site is maintained by Dennis Boals. It provides many useful links to resources for K-12 teachers of history and social studies.

National Archives and Records Administration

The National Archives has digitized thousands of documents, images, and other material. Be sure to check out NARA’s digital classroom.

Native American Sites

At this site, one will find a comprehensive list of Web sites relating to Native American culture and history.

New York Public Library - Digital Gallery

The official White House Web site has information relating to the Presidents and their wives.

United States Historical Census Browser

This site has statistical information on the American people from 1790 to 1970.

Wisconsin Historical Society’s Turning Points in History

This site contains "hundreds of eyewitness accounts, pictures, and museum objects. Dozens of essays, lesson plans and reference tools."

Women and Social Movements in the United States

This site has dozens of instructions lessons and classroom materials relating to American women.

The Library of Congress set up this Web site which has maps, documents, and historical essays relating to the transformation caused by Columbus’ travels.

From Revolution to Reconstruction: A Hypertext on American History

Maintained by scholars at the University of Gronigen in the Netherlands, this site has thousands of documents that relate to the Revolutionary period.

George Washington Papers Home Page

One will find selected documents from Washington’s public career.

The Jesuit Relations and Allied Documents

The French Jesuit accounts of New France provide historians with an invaluable window into the world of colonial America. Although at times a little difficult to read and understand, working with these documents is well worth the effort.

Liberty! The American Revolution

This is the companion Web site to PBS’s exciting miniseries on the American Revolution. It has documents, timelines, biographies, bibliographies, maps, and more.

The Library of Virginia Digital Library Program

This site has over 2 million digitized records relating to the colonial period and beyond. A stunning array of primary material is available and easily searched.

Notes on the State of Virginia

Jefferson’s famous (or infamous) Notes constitute one view of the late eighteenth century.

The Amistad Case

John Brown

Prairie Fire

This site has primary source material as well as interpretative essay on American Indians and the Old Northwest.

The Valley of the Shadow

This is one of the most celebrated and awarded Web sites relating to United States History. Professor Edward Ayers has made available hundreds of documents relating to two communities in the years immediately before the Civil War.

The Special Collections Department of Virginia Tech maintains this Web site which has lots of primary sources including diaries and letters from Civil War soldiers.

Freedmen and Southern Society Project

This site has over 50,000 documents relating to African American slavery, the Civil War, and Reconstruction.

Getting the Message Out

Another Web site from Northern Illinois University Library. This one has materials relating to national political campaigns from 1840 to 1860.

Lincoln Net

Maintained by the Northern Illinois University Library, this Web resource has documents, images, sounds, and visual materials relating to Abraham Lincoln and antebellum politics.

The United States Civil War Center

The United States Civil War Center is located on the campus of Louisiana State University. Its Web site has over 2500 links to Civil War Web sites. A great place to begin a search.

Japanese-American Internment: Resources for Teachers

This is a well organized Web site on Japanese-Americans and internment during World War II.

The Lion’s History: Researching World War II Images of African-Americans

The National Archives created this online collection of images relating to African-Americans and World War II.

The Truman Presidential Library Web site has documents and other classroom resources for exploring this important topic.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Papers Project

Stanford University historian Clayborne Carson is the editor of the Martin Luther King, Jr., papers and this Web site provides information about the project as well as access to some documents.

National Security Archive

This site has thousands of declassified documents relating to the Cold War including such issues as the Cuban Missile Crisis. A wonderful resource.

VENONA Project

In the 1940s, the United States maintained an ultra-secret intelligence operation, codename VENONA, which sought to decode Soviet messages. A fascinating study in the spy vs. spy aspects of the Cold War.

Vietnam War Internet Project

The Lyndon B. Johnson Library at the University of Texas hosts this site which contains an extensive list of resources on the Vietnam War.
