- Outsourcing email
Peter Kretche was invited to discuss with the Council the pros and cons of outsourcing our student email. Peter reported that most schools that go the route of outsourcing are using a very old version of a basic email system. He also reported that it would cost us money to switch and that the return on investment wouldn’t happen for several years. Currently, each mailbox costs us $2.57 per year. Outsourcing options would run $2.59 - $5.39 per mailbox per year. The other reason people outsource is for more storage space. On average a student mailbox is 35MB in size, which is well under the 250MB we offer students, so our students don’t seem to have the need for 7GB like Google offers. Perspective students would not be eligible for these outsourced accounts, so we would still have to run a system on campus. The only UW school to outsource email is Parkside.
- Reviewed 2010 Plan:
The Council was given an updated list of the 2010 Action Plan items that have been completed, in implementation, and in development phases.
- Tech Plan 2015 - update on unit meetings:
Kathy distributed a list of the unit meetings that she has scheduled for the spring semester. These meetings will provide her with information about new technologies and issues that should be addressed in the 2015 Tech Plan.
- Web Policy – 2nd reading:
Paula reviewed changes in the policy from the first reading. Hearing no issues the Council adopted the policy and it will be sent to the Chancellor’s Cabinet for approval.
- Other Business:
Scott Furlong asked that we look into the possibility of automatically adding faculty teaching schedules into Outlook. Kathy said that IT would look into it further with a potential pilot in fall. Paula suggested that the academic and administrative calendars be added into Outlook as holidays.
- Adjourn 9:20am
