Earlier this semester students were asked to complete the Student Technology Survey. The results of that survey are shared here. Following the results are a list of top issues identified by students and the actions that will be taken to address them.
- Additional Kiosk Stations – implement summer ‘06
Kiosk stations provide quick access for students to their campus email, the Student Information System, and the Internet. We will add two kiosk stations in the MACH Wintergarden area, one in the MACH lounge on the other end of the building, and two in the Garden Café.
- More computer lab workstations in Mary Ann Cofrin Hall and other remote buildings – implement fall ‘06
While we will not be adding computer labs, we will standardize access to the following four existing general teaching labs and better advertise the availability of these labs for student use between classes.
- MACH 120 (Social Science lab)
- MACH 229 (GIS lab)
- Wood Hall 321/327
- Lab Sciences 102
These labs will be open to all students from at least 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. M-F. (If there are card swipe systems on these rooms, the doors will be set for “auto-open” so that no ID cards are needed.) Class schedules will be posted outside each lab.
- Improved signage for technology resources – implement summer ‘06
Survey results indicated that some students are unclear about the availability and locations of specific technology resources. We will be creating better signage for the following:
- Teaching labs available to students when classes are not scheduled.
- CL 304 – the training room in the back of the 3rd floor library reference area. The 15 PCs in this room can be used by students when library instruction is not being conducted. A schedule is posted outside the room.
- Kiosk stations
- Wireless access areas
- Remote access to computer lab PCs – implement fall ‘07
We are exploring this exciting new concept that would make a bank of campus lab PCs available to students remotely!! Students would be able to log into a lab machine via a web page and get access to all instructional software and their personal network volume.
- Additional color printer for IS General Access lab – implement fall ‘06
Our one 8 ½ x 11 color printer in the IS general access lab is very busy! We are adding another to reduce wait times and ensure that color printing continues to be available if one printer should go down.
- Maple 10 Mathematics software – implement summer ‘06
We have purchased a site license for Maple 10 math software that includes faculty home use rights. Students will also be able to purchase Maple 10 for about $75. See the Maplesoft web site for a review of features and flash demos of this impressive application -- http://www.maplesoft.com/products/maple/demo/. We will be working on ways to familiarize faculty and students with this software and providing training resources. Note: NAS has contributed $5000 toward the cost of this license.
- Adobe Acrobat 7 Professional – implement spring ‘06
Acrobat Professional allows students to create platform independent PDF documents. Currently it is installed in Lab J. We will purchase additional licenses to install it on the 35 PCs in the open area outside Lab J.and the multimedia machines in Lab E.
- Dreamweaver 8 – implement fall ‘06
Dreamweaver is a campus standard for web page development. We will upgrade to Dreamweaver 8 in Lab E, and purchase additional licenses for the 35 PCs in the open area outside Lab J.
- Studio MediaSuite v10 – implement fall ‘06
Pinnacle Studio is our campus standard for multimedia production (IS1129E & Project Rooms). We will upgrade to Studio MediaSuite v10, which provides enhanced functionality and the ability to better manage audio and still images.
- More Wireless Access - implement on completion of Union project
We will be adding two wireless access points in Union expansion when it is completed.
- Additional scanner in the library General Access lab – Done!
There were several requests for an additional scanner in the library general access lab. A scanner was relocated from the IS lab to the library.
- Additional workshops – implement spring ‘06
Our workshops have become very popular with students. Each semester, we will offer additional free training sessions on Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Excel, PowerPoint, and others as demand dictates.
- DVD Burners – implement fall ‘06
We will be purchasing six DVD burners for the general access labs to assist students in archiving large multimedia files. They will be located in the four multimedia project rooms, one in the IS lab open area, and one in the library. 20 new iMac G5s being ordered for the lab will have SuperDrives with DVD burning capabilities.
