Sorry, can’t stay long, in case Obama is text-messaging us about his VP choice. (We’re betting on the junior senator from Virginia. Not because anybody knows who he is, but of all the names floated, his would look freshest on signs, billboards and URLs. ObamaWebb.com!)  Stay connected. In news today:

UW-Madison chancellor shares what he really thinks of Wisconsin politics
The very week that UW System President Kevin Reilly and the Board of Regents are scheduled to endorse a 2009-11 budget request seeking additional state investment, the outgoing chancellor of the flagship campus lets loose with pretty much unprecedented candor on the state’s largest business lobbying group and on the state Legislature.  John Wiley, still chancellor at UW-Madison until Sept. 1, has stirred things up with his passionately argued op-ed column at http://www.madisonmagazine.com/article.php?section_id=918&xstate=view_story&story_id=235966.

Wiley on WMC response: ‘I thought it was pretty lame’
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is reporting Thursday afternoon that Chancellor John Wiley is dismissive of a written rebuttal to his column by an officer of Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce. See http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=785924.

Tune in for budget session
The Board of Regents meeting Friday (Aug. 22), as always, will be webcast for our viewing enjoyment. The session runs from 9 a.m. to approximately noon at http://www.uwex.edu/ics/stream/regents/meetings/.

Student stipends in 08-09 for Common Theme ‘Waging War, Waging Peace’
Students engaging in research projects pertaining to the 2008-2009 Common Theme of Waging War, Waging Peace are invited to apply for a $50 stipend to aid with their individual or group research expenses. If conducted as a group project, one stipend will be allocated the group. Students or student groups accepted will be expected to share that research at the 2009 Academic Excellence Symposium.  Applicants must submit a one-page summary of their project and attain a signature from a sponsoring faculty or staff member.  Applications are due November 7, 2008 in the Office of the Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences (TH 335).

An invitation for the campus community: Welcome back at AIC
Please plan to attend the Welcome Back Gathering at the American Intercultural Center on Thursday, Sept. 4 from 11:30-1:30. The AIC just moved so come see our new location at the Union (room UU150, down the hall from the Phoenix Club), meet some new students and continuing students as well.  Join us for lunch and fun. Freshmen Orientation Move-in Day is August 28
Over 800 freshmen will arrive Thursday (Aug. 28) beginning at 8 a.m.  Many faculty, staff, student athletes and student government leaders have made it a tradition to provide volunteer assistance on freshmen orientation move-in day.  Parents and students are always very appreciative of the assistance provided on this important day. Some volunteer opportunities remain open.  Interested faculty or staff should e-mail John Gerow, gerowj@uwgb.edu.

Report warns of growing demand for UW counseling
The Chicago Tribune carried a story reporting that the UW System Office of Operations Review and Audit has found the number of students getting counseling has risen on most UW campuses in the past four years. See http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-ap-wi-uw-mentalhealth,0,157686.story.

‘Going green registers with colleges’
That’s the headline over a USA Today story headline earlier this month on students and colleges taking an interest in going green. See http://www.usatoday.com/news/education/2008-08-13-eco-friendly-universities_N.htm.
