Family, friends, UW-Green Bay community gather to honor Leona Cloud
The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay honored a longtime supporter and distinguished graduate Wednesday (Sept. 27) by naming the main dining area in the University Union the Leona Cloud Commons. Mrs. Cloud, who graduated in 1980 after returning to school as an adult student, has been a generous supporter of UW-Green Bay since the 1970s. In May 2005, she received a UW-Green Bay Chancellor's Award for service to the University and the community. Family, friends and students were among those attending the ceremony in what is now known as Leona Cloud Commons.
Leona Cloud was joined at the naming ceremony by her grandson, Walter, left, a UW-Green Bay graduate student, and her son, Bob.
UW-Green Bay Chancellor Bruce Shepard said the University is recognizing Mrs. Cloud for her commitment to making the community "an even better place for future generations."
UW-Green Bay student Bob Kranzusch, Student Government Association secretary of University Union and Dining, said it was rewarding for students that "one of our own" was being honored. "It's nice to know that Mrs. Cloud sat in the same classrooms, studied in the same library, and had some of the same professors we still have today," Kranzusch said. "She knows from experience the kinds of challenges we face day in and day out."
Tom Olson paid tribute to his close friend, Leona Cloud. Olson, co-chair of the UW-Green Bay Capital Campaign, has been a friend of the Cloud family since his youth and was later president and CEO of the Cloud family-owned U.S. Paper Co.
